11 territories represented at Water Operators Conference in Nevis

The Caribbean Basin Water Management Programme Inc, in collaboration with the Nevis Water Department, hosted the Second Annual Water Operators Conference at the Mount Nevis Hotel in Nevis on June 10th and 11th, 2010.

Under the theme Operator Certification – Opportunities, Advances and Experiences, the two-day meeting – which was attended by 37 delegates from eleven territories — opened with a welcome address by the Acting Manager of the Nevis Water Department George Morris and a keynote address by Minister for Communications & Works Carlisle Powell.

On the first day the participants discussed Operator Training and Certification including Alternative Certification and the CBWMP’s own Centre for Excellence.

System Planning and Management was also discussed, with related presentations covering emergency response planning, solving Nevis’ water shortages, standard operating procedures for water distribution systems and the importance of water conservation and reducing ‘unaccounted for’ water.

On Day Two, participants engaged in discussions surrounding Facilities Inspection and Improvement and Utility Collaboration, during which they examined maintenance management systems for utilities, disinfection of pipeline and storage facilities and storage tank operations and maintenance.
They also examined a programme for water utility classification in the Caribbean and benefits of water utility twinning arrangements.

Participants attended from: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the USA.

Meanwhile, the Operators Competition at the meeting was won by Montserrat, with second place going to Antigua
